- UK Finance reportedly terminated Coinbase’s membership after reviewing its membership criteria.
- The trade group concluded that crypto exchanges did not meet its framework, while Coinbase retains the right to appeal.
- COIN stock closed below $200, although the membership decision does not affect Coinbase’s UK regulatory permissions.
Coinbase has reportedly lost its membership in UK Finance after the trade association evaluated its membership framework and determined that crypto exchanges failed to meet its standards.
Bloomberg Law reported on Sept. 23 that UK Finance’s board notified Coinbase of the outcome in a letter dispatched the previous week. The coverage noted that Coinbase holds the option to appeal the termination.
This development has no bearing on Coinbase’s regulatory standing in Britain because UK Finance functions as an industry trade association rather than a licensing authority.
UK Finance Drops Coinbase After Membership Review
Based on the reports, the choice to expel Coinbase comes on the heels of UK Finance reviewing its membership framework, leading the association to establish that crypto exchanges fall short of its membership criteria.
Although the specifics of the updated standards remain unspecified, reports indicate that Coinbase retains the right to challenge the decision through an appeal.
As a result of this exclusion, Coinbase is cut off from an organization representing roughly 300 financial services institutions, which encompass major banks and payment companies.
Numerous figures within the cryptocurrency sector view the exclusion of crypto exchanges from such associations as an indication that traditional finance is actively pushing back against the crypto industry.
While digital assets have gained traction and emerged as a prominent global policy concern, traditional financial institutions now find themselves in direct competition with cryptocurrency models. In the United States, for instance, traditional banks and crypto entities intersect over stablecoin yield within the Clarity Act framework.
Similarly, commercial banks in the UK have previously limited banking access for crypto enterprises. Although the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has opposed blanket banking restrictions, industry participants argue that numerous banks will likely continue enforcing restrictions on crypto even after the FCA’s crypto regulatory regime takes effect in October 2027.
Coinbase Stock Sees Slight Decline After Crossing $200
At the same time, this exclusion leaves Coinbase’s UK regulatory positioning untouched since UK Finance operates outside the capacity of a licensing body. Consequently, the removal may only serve to restrict the exchange’s advocacy leverage within the nation.
In market activity, Coinbase shares experienced a modest drop, declining 1% to $198 after recently breaking past the $200 mark for the initial time since May.
COIN has otherwise enjoyed a solid performance streak, advancing over 20% across the trailing five days, though it remains down 12% for the year.
This price action mirrors that of Bitcoin, which also saw a 2% dip after climbing 11% over the preceding week.
The leading cryptocurrency currently changes hands near $84,000, having climbed from under $60,000 to surpassing $80,000 in a span of three months, despite recording a daily decline of about 4%.
