Tesla Shares Fluctuate Amid Rising EV Demand Ahead of Roadster Launch

Key Insights

  • Tesla stock has experienced recent fluctuations over the past few days.
  • The company stands to gain from the ongoing recovery in electric vehicle sales across the US and Europe.
  • Fuel prices have continued their upward trajectory this month.

Tesla shares finished at $377.33 on September 24 as market participants evaluated mixed demand indicators for electric vehicles. The stock dipped 0.73% during the trading session, following a close of $380.12 the day prior. Even with this recent retracement, Tesla’s share price has maintained a comfortable margin above its lows from late July.

Market observers also monitored the state visit between President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping. The White House welcomed Xi and Madame Peng Liyuan for a state dinner on September 24, though this diplomatic engagement does not singularly account for the daily movement in Tesla’s stock.

Tesla Stock Gets Support From Stronger European EV Demand

Tesla shares have rallied over recent weeks, bolstered by growing optimism that consumers will shift toward electric vehicles as fuel costs climb. Average gasoline prices have risen to $4.4825, while diesel costs have surged to $6.5 in the United States.

These price increases stem from ongoing conflicts, including the US-Iran, Saudi Arabia-Houthi, and Ukraine-Russia wars.

Consequently, adoption rates for electric vehicles may accelerate. Recent data supports this outlook: a report published this week revealed that European EV sales jumped by more than 52% in August—a significant development given that Tesla is the dominant force in Europe’s electric vehicle market.

This data aligns with a separate Bloomberg report indicating that Tesla is ramping up operations at its German facility. The company is also hiring over 1,000 additional workers, contrasting with Volkswagen’s announcement of thousands of layoffs.

A parallel trend is unfolding in the United States. A recent report showed that US electric vehicle sales increased in August compared to the same period a year earlier. However, sales dropped sharply on an annualized comparison because consumers rushed to purchase EVs last year prior to the expiration of the Federal tax credit.

Tesla additionally posted solid vehicle delivery numbers for the previous quarter, selling over 480,000 vehicles against a production volume of 450,000 during the period. This sales surge coincided with a spike in gasoline prices, which peaked above $5 as geopolitical tensions escalated.

Tesla to Launch Roadster Next Week

The upcoming launch of the long-delayed Roadster will serve as the next major catalyst for Tesla stock. The debut is anticipated next week, with production slated for a limited volume of vehicles.

Another critical catalyst to monitor is the release of third-quarter delivery figures, scheduled for early next month. Analysts anticipate relatively healthy delivery numbers for the company, with China acting as the primary drag. Goldman Sachs analysts project deliveries of 435,000 vehicles, whereas the Bloomberg consensus estimates 466,000 units delivered.

Tesla’s third-quarter revenue is projected to reach $27.5 billion, marking a 2.1% decrease from the previous year. This contraction is attributed to the sales surge during the same quarter last year ahead of the tax credit’s expiration. Looking ahead, fourth-quarter revenue is anticipated to jump 14.4% to $28.5 billion, bringing the projected annual total to $106 billion, though actual revenues may exceed current expectations.

Tesla Stock Price Technical Analysis

The daily chart indicates that TSLA stock has mounted a recovery over the past few weeks, climbing from a late-July low of $297 to its current level around $380.

The equity has established an ascending channel pattern and currently sits near the midpoint line, having moved above the 50-day Exponential Moving Average (EMA). Additionally, momentum indicators including the Relative Strength Index (RSI) and the MACD continue to trend upward.

As a result, the stock is positioned to potentially extend its gains as buyers target the $400 resistance threshold. Conversely, a slip below the 50-day EMA at $362 would invalidate this bullish technical outlook.
