Should Investors Buy Nvidia as a Senior Director Keeps Selling Shares?

Key Insights

  • Nvidia stock is failing in its attempts to retest its all-time high.
  • Mark Stevens, a director, is selling his shares aggressively.
  • The stock is sending mixed signals on the daily chart.

On September 23, Nvidia shares stayed under their record high as investors weighed heavy insider selling, exposure to China, and the firm’s extended artificial intelligence growth prospects.

NVDA finished Wednesday’s session down 1.5% at $225.36. The equity hovered roughly 4.7% below its peak intraday high of $236.54, which was attained on May 14.

Meanwhile, Securities and Exchange Commission filings reveal that Nvidia director Mark Stevens offloaded nearly 2.9 million shares between late August and early September. Based on the disclosed transaction prices, those disposals brought in approximately $648 million.

Nvidia Stock Director Sells Nearly 2.9M Shares

Nvidia director Mark Stevens is parting with his shares, prompting questions regarding his intent. Records show he recently unloaded stock valued at over $300 million, following a June sale of shares worth in excess of $295 million.

Additional senior executives have also unloaded shares over the past few months with zero reported purchases. Director Neal Stephen disposed of shares worth more than $3.3 million in June, while Chief Financial Officer Kress Colette offloaded millions of dollars worth of stock earlier in the year.

Insiders generally divest their holdings for several reasons, such as financing major acquisitions or managing their personal portfolios. In severe scenarios, they typically dump stock when anticipating a difficult period for the company.

Regarding Nvidia, it is noteworthy that several top executives retain their holdings. CEO Jensen Huang maintains a substantial position in the company and boasts an estimated net worth of roughly $190 billion. Company shareholders collectively hold upwards of 862 million shares.

The majority of these shareholders are institutional investors, including BlackRock, Vanguard, FMR, State Street, and Geode Capital Management.

Nvidia to React to Trump-Xi Meeting

Looking ahead, a pivotal catalyst for NVDA stock is the upcoming Washington summit between President Donald Trump and Xi Jinping. This encounter is critical given that the two leaders govern the world’s largest economies, which possess a combined annual output exceeding $53.2 trillion.

Nvidia is expected to feature in the discussions, as CEO Jensen Huang has lobbied the Trump administration to permit chip exports to the country. Although the company has commenced shipping certain less-advanced chips to Chinese entities, it is seeking permission for more.

Conversely, China remains hesitant to authorize Nvidia chip imports due to its push for domestic production growth. Prominent Chinese firms like Huawei, Cambricon, Kunluxin, Moore Threads, and MetaX have already developed highly sophisticated chips.

Regardless of the Trump-Xi summit’s outcome, Nvidia has multiple pathways to succeed. Management projects a 77% revenue increase for next year, a forecast calculated without factoring in any Chinese revenue.

The firm stands to gain from several upcoming initial public offerings as well, including those of OpenAI and Anthropic. Anthropic targets a $2.4 trillion valuation, while OpenAI is fundraising at a $1.2 trillion valuation. Nvidia holds significant stakes in both enterprises.

The company also maintains a substantial equity interest in Nscale, a British firm preparing to go public at a valuation of $33 billion.

Nvidia Stock Trades Below May Record High

Technical indicators present conflicting signals for NVDA stock. On the downside, there are indications that the shares are developing a diamond reversal pattern, a formation that frequently precedes a sharp bearish reversal over time.

On the upside, the stock continues to trade above its 50-day and 100-day Exponential Moving Averages (EMA), signaling that buyers remain in command for the moment.

Consequently, the equity could move in either direction at this juncture. A decisive breakout past the upper trendline of the diamond pattern would point to additional upside, potentially reaching $250. Conversely, a retreat below the $220 support level would negate the bullish thesis.
